Paul Dearlove

Paul is the director of his own training company dedicated to changing the quality of thinking, the depth of questioning and the challenging of beliefs about what we can achieve.

After serving as a navigating officer in the Merchant Navy, Paul qualified as a teacher in the 1970’s working in primary and secondary schools. He then worked in the chemical industry as a training officer and development trainer, leaving this prestigious role in the 1980’s to dedicate his time to personal development through Outdoor Education.

In 1994, he led Denmark’s first Outdoor School, a centre that is now at the heart of Adult Learning in the region. Once back in the UK, Paul continued to develop thoughtful and appreciative ways of using the outdoors in developing co-operative learning, becoming part of the leadership team of a large Outdoor Education Centre in Yorkshire.

In 2003 Paul joined the award winning RAIS project, bringing with him the ground breaking OutSmart programme of developing thinking and appreciative dialogue in teams. This programme has been adopted by settings across the England, Scotland and Norway from nurseries to Age Concern workers as a means of challenging individual and group thinking for all learners.

He has worked with some key innovators in the field of leading life change including Anthony Robbins, Bill Martin, Alistair Smith, Jim Cain, John West Burnham, James Nottingham, Robert Dilts and Matt Hudson, and is accredited to run courses in Philosophy for Children (P4C), Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), Coaching, and Appreciative Inquiry.

Today, Paul supports programmes as diverse as a Train the Trainer ‘Peer Support’ programme for the NHS and Healthy Schools, coaching on the Graduate Support Programme for Early Years Practitioners and coaching parents and practitioners in "self belief" strategies in underachieving areas of the North East of England. He is a regular contributor to the Teaching Thinking and Creativity magazine, and the Journal of Appreciative Inquiry Practitioners, and is the Director of a nature kindergarten in rural Northumberland.
