Inquiry-led Learning

Inquiry-led learning refers to "question-driven learning" rather than the predominant model found in schools of "answers first then questions".

The approach encourages students to take more responsibility for:

  • determining what they need to learn
  • identifying the relevant resources and deciding how best to use them
  • assessing their own progress in learning

Everyone at Sustained Success is passionate about inquiry-led learning. Indeed, this phrase pretty well covers most of the work we do in schools. Based on our many years experience as teachers, coordinators, headteachers, trainers and consultants, we have found the following benefits of inquiry-led learning

  1. Students take more responsibility for their own learning
  2. The classroom becomes more a climate for inquiry, research and curiosity and less of a test-driven culture
  3. Exam results improve because students learn how to learn so that learning is not restricted to time in the classroom
  4. Everyone involved develops their library, interview, web-search and critical thinking skills
  5. The questioning skills of students, teachers and parents improve over time

The following members of our team have been instrumental in supporting teachers across the world in the development of inquiry-led learning:

James Nottingham, the director of Sustained Success. James is a renowned P4C trainer, experienced in the development of communities of inquiry with children and young people of all ages, as well as with community groups, businesses, school partnerships and online networks

Martin Renton, senior consultant with Sustained Success. Martin's work on inquiry-led learning with middle and secondary school pupils featured on the acclaimed training DVD, Intelligent Learning

Gordon Poad, Sustained Success associate. As a highly experienced drama and creativity practitioner, Gordon has an extensive background in inquiry-led learning. He is an adviser to many national and international inquiry-based projects

Louise Brown, Sustained Success associate. Louise is a former Early Years advisory teacher who has worked with local and national bodies on the development of inquiry skills particularly with young children

Ragnhild Isachsen, Sustained Success associate. Ragnhild is the headteacher of a primary school in Norway that has been recognised for its inquiry approach to learning, progress and development
