Personal, Learning,Thinking Skills

In England, the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) has developed a framework for describing personal, learning and thinking skills (PLTS) that applies to all young people aged 11 - 19. The framework comprises six groups of skills:

  • independent enquirers
  • creative thinkers
  • reflective learners
  • team workers
  • self-managers
  • effective participators

Our Sustained Success team can really help your school or college to embed this framework with great success and maximum efficiency.

We highly recommend using Philosophy for Children (P4C) and the community of enquiry as this hits EVERY aspect of PLTS with it rich academic tradition built up over 40 years of practice and evidence-based research. Alternatively, many of de Bono's lateral thinking techniques, Feuerstein's Instrumental Enrichment, and the thinking skills strategies developed by David Leat and others at the University of Newcastle are exceptional approaches to the PLTS, and we can help you with them all.

James Nottingham, our director, is an internationally sought-after P4C trainer and creativity consultant, having trained with Edward de Bono at the University of Malta; Martin Renton, our senior consultant, has led the development of the acclaimed Northumberland Thinking Skills Certificate for many years in secondary schools and FE colleges across the British Isles; and we have a number of close Associates with particular expertise in creativity, inquiry-led learning, reflective thinking and team work.

We can offer you support with:

  1. Planning for the PLTS
  2. Embedding Philosophy for Children and the community of enquiry into your curriculum, an approach that ticks every one of the PLTS boxes
  3. Infusing any of the techniques from de Bono, Feuerstein, Newcastle Thinking Skills, Habits of Mind, Dramatic Enquiry, or Myers Briggs
  4. Coaching colleagues to build their confidence in the PLTS and any of the techniques listed above
  5. Demonstration lessons with any group of students
