MartinRenton   Book Now

Martin Renton has taught in primary and secondary schools, as well as in further and higher education. He is now a senior consultant for Sustained Success, committed to developing world-class education through improvements in teaching and learning, communication, creativity and leadership. Martin has earned his reputation through his work in schools, further education colleges and universities over the last six years, whilst working in a combined role as teacher and consultant. His approach to pedagogy can be seen in Radical Encouragement (Imaginiative Minds; 2006) and Thinking Through Music (Chris Kington; ue Sept 2009), as well as in regular features.

Martin grew up in Northumberland, beginning his professional life in a pottery.  He then worked for a short time in piano removal and restorations, before moving to the French Alps as an au pair.  Martin then trained as a teacher, graduating from Lancaster University, and took up his first teaching post as Head of Music in a Middle (9 – 13) school.

Since then, Martin has worked in a number of schools, as Head of Humanities and ICT, and in a senior leadership role, as Special Needs Co-ordinator and Secondary Strategy Manager, developing pedagogical approaches to support pupil's independent learning.

This led Martin to a secondment at Local Authority level, supporting schools with the DfES Leading in Learning programme, developing coaching, thinking skills and enquiry approaches across the curriculum. He also worked closely with Headteachers and senior leadership teams to develop whole-school visions for improving opportunities for young people.

He then returned to the classroom on a part-time basis, allowing him the opportunity to continue his work as a consultant with BBC Education, Creative Partnerships, Sheffield and Newcastle Universities, the Learning Skills Development Agency (Northern Ireland) and the Northern Regional College (Further Education).

Martin now works with Sustained Success, continuing to support pedagogy and leadership nationally and internationally, through his work with practitioners in all phases and at all levels.
