Early Years (0 - 5)

"Inspiring! James is an excellent practitioner - loved the stories to back up theories and learning. He had a brilliant way of explaining things" (Feedback from Outstanding Early Years Teaching course)

James Nottingham, the director of Sustained Success, has a particular passion for the early years, having begun life as a teaching assistant in a school for deaf children, working with the “little ‘uns” (before the days of the “Foundation Stage”!) Martin Renton, senior consultant with Sustained Success, and our Associates Louise Brown, Pippa Lesley, Gordon Poad and Ragnhild Isachsen are also experienced early years’ teachers and foundation stage leaders.

Tailor-made Options

CHALLENGE: to learn, young children need to be working at one level above where they're at, in terms of skill, knowledge, language and concepual developent. This session looks at the reasons for this and some strategies to ensure all children are making progress

COMMUNICATION: an insight into proven strategies for enhancing staff and children’s communication, including new ways to interact with children that will deepen learning

CREATIVITY: though young children are naturally creative, schools often stifle their creativity through a prescribed curriculum. Having trained with Edward de Bono at the University of Malta, the Sustained Success team are able to offer practical and thought-provoking ways to ensure that your children continue to be creative long after they have left your setting Read more

DRAMATIC ENQUIRY: last year, James was part of a Creative Partnerships research project that identified whether young children think differently when they’re in a dramatic role (they do!) This session draws on the experiences, techniques and gains that this approach to learning can have in your setting Read more

FEEDBACK & PRAISE: this interactive session identifies how to get the balance right between feedback and praise so that we can help all our children to develop long-lasting self esteem Read more

GOOD TO OUTSTANDING: for EY settings in England, we can help you to identify exactly what can be done to raise your Ofsted rating from good to outstanding within the EYFS Read more

P4C: Philosophy for Children (P4C) is an outstanding way to develop children’s curiosity, creativity, communication skills and self esteem. Though often thought of as a technique for older children, it can actually be used to superb effect with children from 3 onwards. From March 2009, James will be running P4C for Early Years (3 - 7) courses on behalf of Osiris Read more

QUESTIONING TECHNIQUES: including when to question children and when not to; how to question for effective learning and communication; and new ways to build on children’s natural curiosity and deepen learning

INQUIRY-LED LEARNING: encouraging children to question adults about what they do and (perhaps more importantly) DON’T understand about something is the single most effective way of improving education (Hattie, 2008) This session explores the research behind this claim and identifies the tools and techniques we can use to create the right learning climate for this to happen Read more

SELF-ESTEEM: for five years, James Nottingham led an award-winning, multi-million pound project to raise the self esteem and aspirations of young people across north east England. This session draws on those experiences and points at ways to develop resilient, positive and self-confident children of all ages Read more

THINKING SKILLS: having trained in P4C (Philosophy for Children) in the early 1990’s, James worked alongside the University of Newcastle to develop thinking for learning strategies, many of which are now part of the EYFS. This session draws on these experiences and identifies the very best techniques for enhancing children’s learning Read more
