| Family Learning
Family Learning describes a wide range of activities and courses where parents, grandparents, children, carers, neighbours and friends are involved in learning together.
James Nottingham, the director of Sustained Success, was the founding director of RAIS, a multi-million pound social regeneration project that won a prestigious award for raising the aspirations and achievement of children and young people across North East England. A key to the success of this project was involving parents more in their child's learning
Together with Martin Renton, a teacher and father involved in this regeneration project, and Ragnhild Isachsen, a headteacher and grandmother who was also involved, we can help you to engage your parents and community more in the education of young people
The benefits of family learning include:
- Enhanced achievement
- Improved behaviour
- Increased self esteem
- Greater confidence
- Better social skills with peers and adults
At Sustained Success, we tailor-make every piece of training and support we offer schools, communities and families. However, the typical programme for a Family Learning workshop looks like:
Session 1 (90mins): What is self esteem and how does it affect children? A look at what characterises self esteem based on the research of Carol Dweck, one of the world’s leading psychologists and researchers. We will identify how self esteem affects children and what can be done to boost children’s chance of success in the future
Session 2 (90mins): Encouraging your children "into the pit" Focussing on a way to interact with your children that will help them to develop resilience, confidence, inter-dependence and self esteem. We will also consider ways to explore moral issues with your child that will not only teach them "right from wrong" but also help them to develop a moral mind
Session 3 (90mins): Supporting your child’s learning at home and at school In this session, we will consider the Myers Briggs type indicator (MBTI) and the learning pyramid. Both of these give us insights into how children learn. We will then discuss ways to help your child learn, no matter what personality or interests they have
Session 4 (60mins): Practical and positive steps forward The final session of the course will review the day, identify ways forward and offer time for reflection and evaluation
This workshop, and others like it, can be run for any group connected with learning - parents, teachers, support staff, extended family members, and community groups
