| Critical Thinking
Make a BIG difference to student thinking, motivation and exam performance
"Critical" comes from the Greek, Kriticos, meaning 'judgement' and much of what is involved in Critical Thinking is in developing students’ ability to make better judgements. Critical thinking also embraces logic and strong questioning skills.
Critical thinking techniques are easily learned and can significantly improve learning and exam performance. Students of all ages can use critical thinking skills to improve their written work, respond more effectively to exam questions and think with clarity.
Many of the Sustained Success team have taught critical thinking in primary schools, and trained teachers and students in secondary schools to prepare for AS and A level specifications in critical thinking. James Nottingham, our director, has also trained alongside Dr R van den Brink-Budgen, the Chief Examiner of OCR’s Critical Thinking exam in the UK
We can train you teaching staff to use critical thinking techniques to help their students to:
- understand the importance of examining knowledge and beliefs carefully
- recognise, analyse and evaluate beliefs and claims in a variety of contexts
- identify and evaluate assumptions
- evaluate the credibility of evidence
- distinguish between different types of reasoning, including common errors
- make connections and synthesise information and arguments
- generate their own arguments and express them clearly

"Intelligence divorced from judgment produces nothing but foolishness. Understanding is the knowledge of the general. Judgment is the application of the general to the particular. Reason is the power of understanding the connection between the general and the particular." (Immanuel Kant, Thoughts on Education, No. 68)
